Iconic Food Truckin’ business Cantina Movil continues to innovate and trucks into the Cloud.

Cantina Movil was the first Food Truck to roll into Sydney town and bring “street feasting” to the forefront of Sydney’s landscape.

Hailing from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Cantina Movil started its engine on Boxing Day 2011, serving it up at Dee Why and Curl Curl beaches. Always on the move, today Cantina’s posse traverses the CBD and Greater Sydney, its landmarks, beaches, public and private events, delivering Sydney’s best Mexican street food to an ever growing legion of Amigos. Well known and loved for providing catered menus for the masses, Cantina Movil transforms any party into a fiesta.

Their initial success led to the opening of a traditional store front on the corner of Crown and Oxford streets in Darlinghurst, which became the site where their signature slow-roasted meats and authentico pinto beans are created.

This success has continued, and today, they have opened a second store front, Cantina BAR and GARAGE at 99 Glebe Point Road, Glebe, and have a second Food Truck under build. But with success has come growing pains, and Cantina Movil needed to look at ways to work smarter, and ensure their back of house systems had the ability to support the expanded business and future growth opportunities.

Cantina Movil director, Stephanie Raco “The administration of the business for just the one store and one truck was really starting to consume a lot of valuable time, and with plans to double the size of the business, and a baby on the way, we recognised we needed to do things differently, so we engaged Jumeira Consulting to complete a review.”

The review was completed in two days and took into consideration Cantina Movil’s business model, business plan, current systems, work practices and business problems.

“One of the key issues identified in the review, was the fact the current finance, accounting and payroll system in use, was installed on a 4 year old Laptop, and had never been backed up for data recovery purposes.” says Jumeira Consulting’s Managing Director, Scott Ferguson. This obviously posed a significant risk to the day-to-day running of the business and was immediately remedied by implementing Jumeira Consulting’s Managed Online Backup and Recovery solution.

With the immediate risk to Cantina Movil’s business mitigated, and detailed business requirements documented, Jumeira Consulting conducting a thorough market scan to identify the best possible solution.

The solution identified included a Cloud based Finance, Accounting and Payroll system from Xero that provides;

- Full accrual based accounting system with a cashbook, invoicing, debtors, creditors, GST, payroll and reporting.

- Automatic bank feeds to easily report current cash position.

- Simple and easy BAS reporting.

- Automatic updates to Tax tables.

- Anywhere, anytime access for business owner, accounting advisor and book keeper.

- Automatic software upgrades and backups ensuring no specialist IT resources needed.

- Subscription based charging model ensuring the cost is predictable.

and a Cloud based mobile Point of Sales system from Revel Systems that provides;

- Inventory Management, Rostering and Time Sheeting.

- Simple to use to reduce staff training costs.

- Offline mode to support the mobile nature of the Food trucks.

- Bar Tabs to support Cantina Movil’s new revenue stream at Cantina BAR and GARAGE.

- Ingredient level reporting.

- Anywhere, anytime access for real-time reporting and management.

- Automatic software upgrades and backups ensuring no specialist IT resources needed.

- - Subscription based charging model ensuring the cost is predictable.

    Furthermore, Jumeira Consulting was able to tailor its service offering by combining the above solution, implementation costs, and hardware costs, in this case iPads, cash draw etc, into a monthly opex model, to deliver on all of the requirements identified in the initial review.

    “The solution allows me to focus on successfully running my business, and not having to worry about the technology.” says Stephanie Raco.

    “And with scarce capital being directed towards the fit-out of the second store and a second truck, the opex model of going Cloud proposed by Jumeira Consulting, was extremely attractive.”

    “Most importantly, I am expecting my first child this October, and the ability to run and stay in control of my business, on my iPad from anywhere at any time, was the deciding factor to go Cloud. I wanted to ensure I could balance the competing priorities of motherhood and successful operating a business without compromising either, and the move to the Cloud gives me the flexibility to achieve this.” Raco said.
